Is there a "free" or open source solution to a iPod converter?

A customer of mine would like me to help get his new iPod going. I was able to find out how to remove mp3's without iTunes, now I need to know how to convert vids to MP4. Every program I run across has a hidden agenda and turns out to be only a trial...

Try Quick Media Converter, i've used it for a few video conversions, it has an issue when you install it and select english as the language of preference it still shows up in french, then you have to go to the upper left hand corner and select english again and all is well.

I did some research and found that the ipod has hidden folders, so you just unhide folders and then you can get in to take out songs or add. You don't need iTunes.
